Q19: How to use remote control software
such as VNC, pcAnywhere, LapLink, Terminal Server, etc.
We will point out three different cases.
- You work on a computer located on a LAN and connected to
the Internet via WOOWEB-PRO. You want to take control over a remote computer,
which is directly connected to the Internet by a modem.
- You work on a remote computer and you want to view and control
a computer located on a LAN and connected to the Internet via WOOWEB-PRO.
- The two computers access the Internet via WOOWEB-PRO.
The first case does not make any problem. No special setup is
required. Cases 2 and 3 are similar and need some modification of the WOOWEB-PRO
settings.
Remote control applications generally use one or several TCP/UDP
ports. These ports may be fixed or configurable values. Here is a non exhaustive
list of default TCP/UDP
ports used by remote control applications.
| Software Application |
TCP/UDP Port Usage |
| VNC |
5900 and 5800 |
| pcAnywhere till version 7.51 |
65301 |
| pcAnywhere from version 7.52 |
5631 and 5632 |
| LapLink |
1547 |
| Microsoft Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Connection |
3389 |
To set up WOOWEB-PRO, proceed as following:
- Refer to the editor documentation to know the TCP/UDP ports used
by the application.
- Make sure there is no protocol limitation on the Internet
connection. To do that, select "Settings..Connections..Properties..Filtering"
and check "Allow all IP protocols".
- You must then give access to remote users. Open "Settings..Remote Filters".
- Select "Allow the remote users according to the
following rules" and add a filter that will authorize the remote users
allowed to take control over the local computer.
- Tell WOOWEB-PRO which local machine is to be accessed from the Internet. To do that,
in the "Destination" tab, fill in the "Map the Internet Client To the Local
Computer" section, the IP address or name of computer where the remote control application
is installed.
- In the "Port/Protocol" tab, validate the remote TCP/UDP ports. To do that, select
either "Allow Accesses to All Ports and Protocols" or "Allow accesses only to the
Checked Following Port Ranges and Protocol Numbers". in this last case, in the "Selected
Port Range and Protocol Number" box, enter the application name and fill the port
range. Click "Add" and make sure the new port name is checked in the port list.
- Validate the filter and make sure it is checked in the "Remote Filters" dialog.
